Planning a trip to the Maldives? There’s great news for travelers — Velana International Airport (MLE) has opened its brand-new international terminal, designed to make arrivals and departures smoother and more efficient.
More Space, Less Waiting
The new terminal officially began partial operations on July 26, 2025, and is now serving selected airlines like Air Arabia, Maldivian, Bangkok Airways, and Oman Air. It’s part of a phased rollout that will include more airlines by October, just in time for the busy winter season.
This expansion is a major upgrade from the old terminal, increasing passenger capacity from 1 million to over 7 million per year. With more immigration counters, faster baggage handling, and plenty of seating, the new space is built to handle larger crowds — especially during peak travel months.
Key Improvements Travelers Will Notice:
- Shorter queues at immigration
- Easier boarding through contact gates
- Faster luggage pickup with a modern baggage system
- Spacious waiting areas with natural lighting and modern design
More to Come
Some features like premium lounges are still in progress, but the current upgrades already offer a big improvement in terms of comfort and convenience. Over the next few months, additional airlines and services will move into the terminal.
Why This Matters for Budget Travelers
If you’re traveling on a tight schedule or connecting from a regional hub, smoother airport operations can make a big difference. Faster processing means less stress on arrival — and more time to enjoy your trip.
